These two beautiful targets have been on my list for ages, but thanks to my northern location they are very low on the horizon on the best of days. On this particular day, during the imaging session this nebulous duo was only 15-20° above the horizon. Adding to my hurdles to overcome, I could not image from home because the lower part of the southern sky is blocked by neighbouring houses and trees.

I drove to a field 30 minutes from home, a location I have used before for astro. Well... last time I was there it WAS a field. Now it was more like a half frozen mud plot. My flimzy but highly portable tripod sank deep in the dirt, making tracking with the star adventurer poor. I had to start with 10 second shots (on other high priority targets) but after some adjustments I got it up to a solid and sturdy 30. I was on that stupid mud-meadow in freezing temps for two hours.

Oh and did I mention the thin layer of clouds that rolled in. In the end I had to abort earlier than planned because my frames started to become unusable. I stacked what I could, but the clouds left some bands along the image, almost ruining it.

I love-hate this hobby so much!

Anyway, I'm glad I managed to capture this target, even if it's in lo-fi.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
