Description

It seems like we get very few clear nights here north of Chicago, let alone  a string of them. So I try to take advantage of the passable nights that come along.

Last night was a bit of an experiment. I wanted to see if I could take photos of delicate DSOs like the Heart Nebula in less than ideal conditions. The moon was waxing gibbous and the sky was hazy with intermittent breaks. Seeing and transparency was average at best and mostly below average. I tested two duo-band filters (Optolong L-Enhance and IDAS NB1 Nebula Booster) to see what I could do.

The picture turned out better than I had a right to expect given conditions. The filters help mitigate moonlight, but haziness is another issue. Post-imaging processing is the best bet for that.

I will try this again if/when I get better conditions. But if I wait around for that, I will be shooting on very few nights during the year.
