Description

This is a cropped version of a wider view of the Gabriela Mistral Nebula region, focussing on the nebula (IC 2599) and associated open cluster NGC 3324. Acquisition details are the same as for the wider view: Ha 5 hours, OII 4.5 hours, SII 3.5 hours = Total 13 hours

IC 2599 is a bright HII emission nebula with an associated open star cluster NGC 3324 approximately 7,500 light years away in the constellation of Carina. Collectively, NGC3324 and IC 2599 have been nicknamed as the Gabriela Mistral Nebula because of the striking (and somewhat disturbing) resemblance to the late Chilean poet

The picture was formed by combining individual images taken with three different filters: ionised Hydrogen (Ha), Oxygen (OIII) and Sulphur (SII). It was processed in PixInsight using the Hubble Space Telescope palette (Red = SII, Green = Ha, Blue = OIII) and a synthetic luminance blended from all three colour components.
