Description

CTB-1 (AKA Garlic Nebula, AKA Popped Balloon Nebula) is super nova remnant approximately 9784 light years away and physically spans another 98 light years in diameter while it is dated to be approximately 10,000 years old. The area top right of CTB-1 has been confirmed as a shell rupture.

Sh2-170 is a much less commonly imaged emission nebula in Cassiopeia. Known aslo as the "Little Rosette",  It lies in the Perseus arm of our galaxy around 7500 light years distant.  At its centre is a small, young star cluster, Stock 18.  The bright star at the centre of the nebula is ionizing the surrounding hydrogen gas and causing the nebula to glow.

This was a difficult image to process as the two objects differ significantly in over all brightness. I finally settle one the 7th processing run as the final image.  I tried my best to bring out the background Ha regions and CTB-1 while keeping SH2-170 a little more tame.  I was pleasantly surprised with how much background Ha was in the frame, almost the entire frame is filled with wispy Ha gas leaving very little of the background space visible.

The detail is not as sharp as other images because of the wider field nature of this image, but I am happy with the broad FOV captured with this scope/camera combo.

Hope all is well out there!
