Description

The Elephant Trunk Nebula

The elephant trunk nebula (IC 1396) is an emission nebula, a concentration of interstellar gas and dust in the constellation Cepheus. It is about 2400 light years away and is around 24 light years long.

Taken from my backyard with the use of narrowband techniques, where each of the 270 images that make up this final photo is taken through one of three filters that eliminate all but specific light wavelengths to be captured, corresponding to Ha, SII, and OIII gases.

Acquisition details (10.8 hours combined):

102 Ha @180 secs (total of 5.1 hours)

82 OIII @120 secs (2.7 hours)

60 SIII @180 secs (3 hours)
