The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), satellite galaxies under the arch of the Milky Way. Looking due south towards the South Celestial Pole of earth’s rotational axis (Phillip Island last week).
Brightest star below the Milky Way arch is Canopus just up and right of the LME. The brightest star on mid right edge is Sirius. Constellation of Orion (bottom right corner) is about to set over the Mornington Peninsula. The Carina nebula is the faint pink spot in the Milky Way band just NW of centre. The 2 very extensive and dark nebula (black-looking dust lanes) embedded within the left hand side of the Milky Way are part of the “Great Emu” in aboriginal folklore, here looking down at the LMC.
