Description

This object is an open cluster located 3600 light years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius. The cluster is about 10 arc-minutes in diameter and officially consists of less stars than it appears, about 25 in total (the larger bright blue stars). It appears to be more stars than that because of the large number of smaller foreground and background stars. The bright 7th magnitude orange star (HD 152524) is not part of the cluster and is located much closer to us, at 2500 light years away.

There are many star patterns in the image which I find interesting. In particular, I like the tiny line of three blue stars located in front of HD 152524, as well as the set of 10 or so tiny colorful orange and blue stars located halfway between center of the image and the top of image.

Even though this object is far south for me at -40 degrees declination, I was very happy to be able to achieve fairly tight, round stars throughout the image.
