Description

This object (Sh2-16) is a HII region located 5000 light years away in the southern constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -29 degrees. It is also known as RCW 137 and Gum 70. Sh2-19 is the large HII region in the upper left corner, while Sh2-18 is the small circle of HII between Sh2-16 and Sh2-19.

Sh2-16 is ionised by the star TYC 6840-271-1, which is the medium-bright pure white star in the center of the HII region, a short distance directly above the top yellowish star. The dust bands around that yellowish star have interesting shapes.

One star cluster appears in the right center of the Sh2-16 region - Collinder 347. This small, subtle cluster consists of 14 bright blue and yellow stars. The cluster is in the shape of a horizontal oval, with the left side of the cluster silhouetted against the large dark dust patch on the right side of Sh2-16.
