Description

M78, also known as NGC 2068, is a bright diffuse reflection nebula approximately 1,400 light years from Earth that can be seen in the constellation Orion. It is the brightest of a group of nebulae that also includes NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071. The cloud of dust in M78 is made visible by reflected light from two B-type stars, HD 38563 A and HD 38563 B.

The picture was formed using four different filters: Luminance, Red, Green and Blue. It was processed in PixInsight. The master Luminance was formed by combining an integrated Luminance with a synthetic luminance blended from all three colour components. The final image was re-sampled by 120% for aesthetic reasons.
