Description

LDN 1235, also known as the Dark Shark Nebula, is a massive dust cloud found in a dense star field within Cepheus at a mere 652 ly from our solar system. It is roughy 9 x 4 arcmin in apparent size, which makes it approximately 1.7 ly in diameter. It is highlighted by two small, yet beautifully blue, reflection nebulae, vdB 149 and vdB 150, bottom and top of this image, respectively.

I shot this from the Medomak Retreat Center, during the 6th annual Medomak Astronomy Retreat & Symposium (MARS 6) last week. It was my first time away to a relatively dark sky site, and oh how delicious the night skies were. We lucked out and had 4.5 clear nights out of 6, in a season where less days than that were clear in a given month!
