Description

NGC 253 is a spiral galaxy in the Sculptor constellation, around 11 million light years from earth.

Based on our current measurements, NGC 253 is the closest starburst galaxy to earth. Starburst means that the rate of active star formation there is much higher compared to the average observed in galaxies. Generally speaking, these galaxies (or well, certain regions where the activity is highest) are pretty violent places. High star formation also means more young and massive stars; hence high radiation output and powerful stellar winds, making for quite the extreme environment.
