Description

M 83 (also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy or NGC 5236) is a barred spiral galaxy. It is located in the constellation Hydra. This galaxy is one of the closest and brightest barred spiral galaxies in the sky. Approximately 15 million light years from earth and first discovered on February 23, 1752 by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. Charles Messier added it to his Messier Catalogue in March 1781.
