Description

There's a lot going on in this image of an area about 1.5 degrees wide in the constellation Cygnus (not far from the central star representing the Swan's body).  The most obvious feature is the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), the bright emission nebula above and right of center.  This nebula is the result of a stellar wind from WR136, the bright Wolf-Rayet star near the center.  Left of center is the Soap Bubble (PN G75.5+1.7), a dim blue planetary nebula.  Planetary nebulae are formed when stars like our Sun late in their lives begin to shed their outer layers.  In the lower left corner is a small open cluster, IC 4996.  At the top just left of center is a very nice double star pairing the distinctly reddish carbon star RS Cygni with a blue-white neighbor.  The entire region is awash in streams of interstellar gas with active star formation.
