Description

One of the most photographed regions of space due to its dramatic equine silhoutte, the Horsehead is a thick cloud of dust blocking light from a surrounding nebula, IC 434. Part of the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, the hydrogen gas emits vivid red light in a process of ionizing radiation from the nearby star Sigma Orionis.

The Horsehead's relatively faint magnitude makes it a challenging object to observe visually but its location is at least very easy to find. One only needs to look half a degree south from the leftmost belt star in Orion, known as Alnitak.

The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula in the constellation Orion. It is about 1,200 ly light-years away.

The bright star Alnitak (ζ Ori), the easternmost star in the Belt of Orion, shines energetic ultraviolet light into the Flame and this knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there. Much of the glow results when the electrons and ionized hydrogen recombine. Additional dark gas and dust lies in front of the bright part of the nebula and this is what causes the dark network that appears in the center of the glowing gas. The Flame Nebula is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region that includes the famous Horsehead Nebula.
