Description

The Jellyfish Nebula (IC 443) is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini.

This fairly bright nebula is approximately 5000 light-years from Earth and is estimated to be roughly 70 light-years in size.

This image consists of 21 hours of exposure - 239 subs (172 x 300s & 67 x 360s) taken with an ASI071MC Pro camera cooled to 20f.  The telescope is the Skywatcher Esprit 120ED triplet refractor and the mount is a Skywatcher EQ6r Pro.

Image acquisition software includes APT, PHD2, EQMOD, and ASCOM.  Processed in Pixinsight.

At mid-northern latitudes, the best time to see and photograph the Jellyfish Nebula is from November to March. From my latitude (35 degrees north), this nebula rises high into the sky above Orion.

At the bottom of the image is the very bright star, Propus.  Line up Alnitak with Beetleguese and look for Propus and Tejat.  The Jellyfish lies between.
