Description

The weather in California has been brutal this winter with very few clear nights.  Even on a mostly clear night, there was usually a thin layer of cirrus.  I collected about 120 hours of data in total over a four month period and discarded all but the best 40 hours of mediocre data.  This is one of only three images that I was able to produce from that site over the entire winter!  The others struggled to get many votes in the IoTD process as they suffered from poor data quality as well.    So for this one, I just kept on collecting data, the brute force approach.

In December we actually had four or five clear nights.  But right on cue, my onboard computer was corrupted by a Windows update and became very unstable.  I lost a good chunk of data and and a bunch of clear nights trouble shooting.   I finally gave up and sent out a spare computer to the observatory which got me going again just in time for the next round of atmospheric rivers.

So, taking into account four months of pier rental, on-site tech support, and Fedex charges.... this is one very expensive image!

It was a bear to process.  The SNR was not great due to the sky conditions and the seeing was sub-par.  Like many of my images these days, after the first few hours of processing I walked away from it disgusted thinking there is no way I can create a decent image out of this mess.  But, I kept coming back and trying different tricks and processes.  In the end, I am pleased with the result given what I had to work with.

Thanks for stopping by.
