Description

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the larger IC1396 region located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth.  The entire IC 1396 region is ionized by a massive star, except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star's harsh ultraviolet rays.  The nebula is large and relatively faint, stretching over 100 light years. The trunk of the nebula stretches for over 20 light years and is designated IC 1396A.  Here is my version of the Elephant Trunk:
