Description

After patiently waiting for 6 weeks for the weather to clear out, I thought I would challenge myself and find a rarely imaged object. I chose the LBN 769 (SH2-224) , the rice hat nebula.

This is a supernova remnant located in the Constellation of Auriga. The shape of this nebula resembles "DouLi" - a conical hat typically made with bamboo which is often seen in Asian countries. I managed to spend 26 hrs on this target. The Sii was pretty weak so early on I decided to go with the HOO palette.

This object, benign faint, is incredibly difficult to frame. I could not see this in stellarium (Even with DSS turned on). Neither could I frame it in telescopius. On a 5 min exposure, through my Ha filter, the hat was barely visible. It took me an entire nights worth of data to realize that the object was not completely centered. I decided to continue and crop later.
