Description

IC 4628, the Prawn Nebula, lies just south of Antares in Scorpius. A typical hydrogen emission nebula, the massive young stars nearby strip electrons from atoms via ultraviolet light. The recombination of the electrons with their ions causes the nebular glow. This emission, known as hydrogen-alpha, is in the red area of the spectrum, causing the red color in the image. The nebula is about 6000 light years distant, and is about 250 light years across.

Below the Prawn is open cluster Caldwell 76 aka NGC 6231 or the Northern Jewel Box Cluster. It is about the same distance as the Prawn Nebula (5900 light years).
