Description

Located in the constellation Sagittarius, centered on the globular cluster NGC 6522 (bottom from centre), Baade's Window is a peephole (approximately 1 degree in diameter near the 'spout' of the teapot asterism in Sagittarius) to the central bulge of the Milky Way with relatively low amounts of interstellar dust. This 'observational window' is used by astronomers to study the stars in the galactic centre (central bulge) of the Milky Way. As expected, there is an explosion of stars in the area around NGC 6522! This is because we are looking at the galactic centre region, mostly unimpeded by dust. NGC 6522 is thought to be one of the oldest globular clusters in the Milky Way. The other globular cluster in this image is NGC 6528.
