Description

The Vela supernova remnant is the aftermath of a supernova that occurred around 11,000 years ago.  It is located in the southern constellation Vela, about 900 light years away from us.  It is one of the closest known SNR's to Earth.

I can't be the only one who sees Homer J. Simpson here.  That was the image that jumped out at me the very first time that I saw a high resolution photo of the Vela SNR.  Now I cannot unsee it!  A wider field view looks more like Marge with her blue hair to be fair.
