Description

I am lucky to live in one of the most beautiful areas on Earth, under Bortle 3 skies, but living within a minute of -45 South and being surrounded by mountains, rules out a fair chunk of the Northern Sky.

So for the last clear night of this dark of moon (more than likely), I thought I would attempt something mildly heroic - at least for me - the Veil Nebula.

A 1.30am transit at a dizzying altitude of 14deg - 4 deg above mountains directly to the North - I managed to squeak in 1.5hours on the Veil with my trust Canon and 200mm lens before the freezing fog finally closed in. Still impressed with the technology that runs flawlessly exposed to sub-zero conditions all night.

The result is nothing special, but it did give me the opportunity to learn some more post-processing skills (noise-removal, star reduction) in PixInsight.
