Description

The image was taken during my vacation in Crete in 2022 under favorable seeing conditions and features Jupiter and its moons, Io and Ganymede. Ganymede is entering Jupiter's shadow (1:57 UT) and is about to be fully eclipsed by the gas giant. I also created an animation from the red data showing the eclipse and uploaded it as a separate post.

In autumn 2023, the image was selected as a winning entry in the astrophotography competition held by Tartu Observatory  (Estonia), in the “Solar System” category. The photo was displayed at an open-air exhibition at the Tartu Observatory Museum. Another one of my images, featuring comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) passing near Mars on February 11, 2023, won second place in the same category.
