Description

The Cygnus Loop is a large supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus, left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred between 5000 to 8000 years ago. The emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across, lies about 1500 ly aways.

Some arcs of the loop emit in the visible electromagnetic range. The complete loop is revealed by radio, infrared and X-ray images.

The filaments of gas and dust visible in the ultraviolet light were heated by the shockwave from the supernova, which is still spreading outward from the original explosion (the present speed of the filaments is about 100 km/s.
