Description

While drawing this planetary nebula, William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse, felt reminded of the face of an owl and gave it his name. The nebula had been discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain more than 70 years earlier in February 1781, as well as the small companion galaxy M 108.
