Description

Like most of us, the Horse Head Nebula was one of my first images of the night sky.  It is in one of the most varied areas of the sky.  This time I wanted to see what I could do with my longest focal length refractor and focus on getting a more detailed image of just the Horse Head.  The faint stars being formed, the delicate whisps of the nebula, the backlight from the star behind and above the nebula, the rolling "cloud" of excited gas surrounding it, as well as those mysterious and beautiful "vertical" striations caused by some unknown source of cosmic energy make it truly an eye catching object.  And of course in Ha the monster Alnitak is finally tamed.

This image is 6.4 hours of 11min exposures and processed with Pixinsight, Photoshop, Topaz, and StarXTerminator.  The sharpening and noise reduction are mainly done in Topaz.  The before and after on the faint whisps surrounding the horse head itself is remarkable.  I use flats, dark flats, and darks for calibration and I'm in a Bortle 5 sky.
