Description

The colours of the eerie nebula show how the nebula is affected by the strong radiation of the distant star. The hydrogen in IC 63 is bombarded by ultraviolet radiation from the star Gamma Cassiopeia, causing the electrons in the gas to gain energy, which they later release as H-alpha radiation, shown in red in this image.

This H-alpha radiation turns IC 63 into an emission nebula, but we also see blue light in this image. This is light from Gamma Cassiopeia and was reflected by dust particles inside the nebula. This means that IC 63 is also a reflection nebula.
