Description

Having been out of practice with this sort of imaging, I struggled with this one from capture to finish. Did a lot of things wrong. Fumbled with my gear, and spent a lot of time just trying to get the planet in the field of view. Physically exhausted and cold, mentally fatigued and frustrated, I finally gave up late in the evening despite still having clear skies. When I looked at the data the next morning, it was so underexposed that I almost threw it all out thinking it was unusable. All the data was in the first 10% of the histogram.

At first, both AS!3 and PIPP were unable to make anything of the data. I knew that the data was in there, I just couldn't see it. Ended up multiplying the gain by 5x in PIPP to bring the data up to a workable level.  Another issue I ran into was when saving in RAW color space with SER or FITS file format: SharpCap records the Bayer matrix starting with the top row (top-down/left-right), while AutoStakkert reads from the bottom row first (cartesian coords). Neither method is wrong, because it was never standardized. But this means that with an RGGB Bayer pattern, I need to force the pattern as GBRG in AutoStakkert to debayer properly.

Image consists of 3x de-rotated stacks, each 2400x 8ms @ 80 gain, stacked with AS!3 using 1.5x drizzle. PIPP was used to increase gain by 5, center the planet, and crop. Bayer pattern was preserved for use with Bayer drizzle in AS!3. Guiding with PHD2 to keep the target from drifting out of frame.
