Description

Using more 'basic' equipment to get back in the saddle after a long Astro break! So I saw the interesting Pentax K3 SLR with 'Astrotracer', to avoid initial guiding frustrations, and it seems to work very well, an excellent, simple method of re-entering or even pursuing Astrophotography.

Taken from our Bortle 2 skies in country Victoria. I've only just started using the Samyang 135 lens, yes its an amazing little lens.

Being an simple setup, literally just sitting on a tripod, with the camera's sensor magically moving to counteract the earth's rotation, it is subject to strong limitations. Eg. you can only image for about 10 minutes, before the target has moved considerably, requiring manual repositioning of the aim. That's a real pain. And the camera does not have full ASCOM/laptop remote control.
I will be next mounting it on my new Skywatcher Star Adventurer, to see if I can remotely control the slewing and at least reposition more quickly and easily.

If anything, this and other practice images have been a great way to get back into a processing workflow - remembering how to use Pixinsight and some of its addon tools like RC's was a bit of a hurdle after a long break!

Anyway, good to be back, and i'm so amazed at the huge growth in this hobby and massive improvements in imaging skills by everyone - you're all amazing!
