Description

After an interruption of image and sound we are back with a classic:The Rosette (Caldwell 49) The Rosetta Nebula, also known as Caldwell 49, is a vast HII region located some 4700 light-years from the solar system towards the constellation Unicorn It spans 130 light-years in its largest dimension. These figures apply to the entire nebula and not to NGC 2237 which is only a part of it. The mass of the Rosette Nebula is estimated to be about 10,000 times the mass of the Sun.The Rosetta Nebula is an active nursery of stars relatively close to us. As this cloud complex is very large and spectacular to observe, several entries of the NGC catalog are there.·         NGC 2237: the western part of the nebula, although this entry is used for the entire nebula·         NGC 2238, NGC 2239, NGC 2245 and NGC 2246 other parts of the nebula,·         and NGC 2244 (=NGC 2239): a very young open cluster of stars at the center of the nebula. The age of this cluster is about 8 million years. It is the ultraviolet radiation of the stars in this cluster that ionizes the hydrogen of the nebula (HII region).
