Description

First light of my new ZWO AS2600mm Pro and ZWO EFW reveals M27, the Dumbbell Nebula -- estimated to be 1200 light years away, in direction of the constellation Vulpecula (the Little Fox). On this one night session, captured 30 minutes each of L and RGB filters (10 * 180s exposures). Catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764, M27 was the first planetary nebula ever discovered, and is one of the brightest. John Herschel later dubbed it the "dumbbell" because of it's distinctive shape, although to me it looks a lot more like an apple core!

I'm fairly satisfied with the results given that this is both my first attempt capturing an image with a monochrome camera and filters, and my first attempt at processing such an image. Upon assembling the entire image train, I was surprised at how big and heavy the whole camera assembly was, which once attached to my EdgeHD 9.25" with reducer, OAG, guidescope, and miscellaneous other items, adds up to 37 lbs of gear, on my CGEM II mount, which is rated at 40 lb payload! That's about 4 lbs more than the previous configuration, with a ZWO ASI294MC Pro OSC camera. Even though the mount is clearly overloaded, I was able to balance it fairly well, and after running PEC training it seems to be guiding adequately. That said, an IOptron CEM70 is on the way, which should be able to handle this configuration more readily.

I captured 20 180 second subs of H-alpha, but my efforts to blend it with the L-RGB data in Siril compositing tool wasn't satisfactory to me. Whenever skies clear up, I will likely try to capture a a full narrowband version.
