Description

M81 - Bode’s Galaxy - Grand Spiral in Constellation Ursa Major
12 million light-years away and about half the size as our Milky Way at 90,000 light-years across.

Galaxy has a unique appearance with wide yellow-gold core and attached blue spiral arms featuring pinkish Ha star forming regions. As well the expected spiral dust lanes there also are some fainter non-aligned dust lanes toward the bottom of the core. The distinct arms and mis-aligned dust lanes are believed to be caused from galactic tidal interactions with M82 - commonly known as the Cigar Galaxy (next years image?). M81’s dwarf galaxy - Holmberg IX is seen just to the right of the galaxy.
