Description

Caldwell 7 is a hazy blueish intermediate spiral galaxy with pink gaseous regions and dark dust filaments located in the constellation Camelopardalis. It is an outlying member of the M81 Group, and is approximately 9.5 million light-years distant. It bears a similarity to M33, being about 80,000 light years in diameter and containing numerous star-forming H II regions. The northern spiral arm connects it to the star forming region NGC 2404.

There have been two reported supernovae in the galaxy: SN 1954J, which attained a magnitude of 16 at its brightest, and SN 2004dj. SN 2004dj was the nearest and brightest supernovae in the past 17 years. It remains nearest and brightest supernova in 21st century.

This image was captured during three sessions.  The first was February 11, 2022. 60 240s exposures using an ASI071MC camera. The second was April 1st, 2022. 25 240s exposures using an ASI2600MC camera.  The third was April 3rd, 2022 - 29 240s exposures.  Total exposures are 7.6 hours.  Telescope used is the SkyWatcher Esprit 120ED riding the EQ6r Pro mount. Captured with APT and guiding with PHD2.  Processed manually in PixInsight.
