Description

NGC3521
NGC 3521 is a low-surface-brightness and flocculent galaxy, located at an Hubble distance of 37 Mly; measures obtained with different methods give some different results.
It lays in the small south potion of Leo, wedged between the two constellations of Virgo and Sextant.
It has an estimated  diameter of 140 kly, larger than the Milky Way. Its appearance reminds very much M63 in Canes Venatici.
William Herschel discovered it in 1784.
It is part of a group including NGC 5723, UGC 5745, NGC 3423, NGC 3365 and NGC 3495 (all outside the field portrayed here).

Background Galaxies
Several galaxies are visible in the background, placed at remote distances, even beyond 1 Billion light-years. For instance PGC33536 is at 528 Mly, PGC1148913 at 445 Mly, PGC33608 at 592 Mly, and PCG1154756 at 1564 Mly! All these distances are Hubble distances, based on red-shift measurements.
