Description

Like M36 and M37, M38 is an open cluster in the southern reaches of the constellation Auriga.  Discovered by Giovanni Batista Hodierna before 1654, Messier included it in his catalog of 1764.   M38 is about 4000 light years from Earth, and includes 100 or so stars in a volume 25 light years across.  The smaller cluster of 30 or so stars to the lower left is NGC 1907.

In the RGB image, I noticed a bit of reddish nebulosity in the lower and left hand part of the image.  So I went back and collected 15x300 minutes Ha, then added it to the original.
