Description

This is my first attempt at capturing M42 in Narrowband.  Still awaiting my field flattener, but I'm otherwise happy with the data.  Several of the stars are oversaturated, and I think the rings are an artifact of the filters, IIRC.  Of course M42 has a high dynamic range, but I didn't really try to do anything special for that in processing.  I roughly followed these steps, post-calibration and integration of each channel:
  • Drizzle and then integer re-sample each channel
  • Dynamic Background Extraction
  • Use EZ Denoise (TGV and MMT) on each channel
  • Histogram stretch each channel using the Auto SCTF as a starting point
  • LRGB Combine - HSO with Ha as Luminance
  • Use Ha as a mask, and minor adjustments via curves

Overall, I'm happy with the result.  I took a slightly different approach in a separate attempt, and wound up with something noisier and too contrast-y.  I like that the dust between the two bright spots came through in this version.  And those colors!
