Description

A rarely imaged gem, the "Flying Lizard" is an enormous region of nebulosity and star clusters in one of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way, the Small Magellanic Cloud.  Sitting quite a bit away from the core of the galaxy, this one is incredibly faint and slips by on most quick scans of survey data.

Still quite incredible to me that an average joe in a suburban backyard can capture images of nebula in another galaxy.   What can I say, living in the 21st century is awesome.

Presented in a foraxx HOO blend with RGB stars.

I'd recommend checking out Jacob Heppell's amazing effort with an f4 newt:  https://www.astrobin.com/nbff9h/

Logan Carpenter also imaged this region recently, and his final image includes Sii data, with a different take on the colours.  His Oiii data really looks quite exceptional.  Check it out here:  https://www.astrobin.com/irr0f8/
