Description

Abell 194 is a cluster of galaxies in the constellation Cetus. The image shows well over 100 galaxies. The close pair in the upper left is NGC 547 and NGC 545.  Below and to the right is a round elliptical galaxy, NGC 541.  It is of interest that these three have a shroud of hot gas surrounding them.  This is an indication that they are gravitationally interacting.  Another item of note is the blue object on the upper left side of NGC 541 which is called “Minkowski’s object”.  This is an irregular dwarf galaxy with a very high rate of star formation.  Dwarf galaxies usually consist of older stars.  The current thinking is that it is being blasted by a jet of hot gas from its neighbor NGC 541, triggering the burst of star formation observed.
