Description

Had another peek at Mars this morning. Initially both seeing and transparency were poor with some light fog rolling in around 6 am. Most of the early runs were throw away however conditions improved markedly once the planet reached 25°. Here's the best capture from the session, taken 5 minutes before sunrise in bright dawn sky.

QHY sensor pulls reasonable amount of detail on a 4.3" disk. The view is centered on the Martian prime meridian with tongue of Sinus Sabaeus stretching towards the east. Resolution is good enough to glimpse faint outlines of Margaritifer Sinus and Oxia Palus to the west of Sinus Meridiani. Mare Erythraeum and winter ice cap dominate high southern latitudes.

Mars's phase shrunk by 0.3% since the last capture 5 days ago. This trend will continue until Western Quadrature on 14 Oct 2024 when only 88% of illuminated hemisphere will be visible.
