Description

The IC4706 and IC4707 emission nebula pair that gets passed up for the wonderful M17 most of the time and very rarely imaged in this detail, has a very interesting structure greatly resembling a brain stem - hence the “Brain Stem Nebula”.

This nebula complex is located at a distance of about 5.5 kly at which distance the side of FOV on this image corresponds to 30 ly and the length of the “stem” - to 15 ly. The region also features many small dark nebulae and dark filament structures making it a wonderfully complex scene in the narrowband HOS colors.
