Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a trio of spiral galaxies located in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -5 degrees.  The galaxies are each too far apart from each other to be interacting.  We are seeing each of these galaxies about halfway between edge-on and face-on.

NGC 1417 is the central spiral galaxy, located 175 million light years away.  It is a blue magnitude 13 galaxy which spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a Milky Way size diameter of 120,000 light years.  As with most galaxies, the core is yellow and the arms have hints of blue.   The arm structure is fragmented, with numerous star clouds scattered throughout.

I like the color contrast between the yellow galaxy on the left and the blue galaxy on the right.  The galaxy at left is NGC 1418, located 145 million light years away with a diameter of 40,000 light years.  The galaxy at right is NGC 1418, located 225 million light years away with a diameter of 50,000 light years.
