Description

This is a telephoto view of an interesting part of the Milky Way. The many stars of the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, IC 4715, appear very close together but they are not gravitationally bound together in a structure like a star cluster is. It does contain several catalogued star clusters, including NGC 6613, the Black Swan Cluster. The apparent size of IC 4715 is about 1 degree by 2 degrees. It's an extremely large cloud of stars, spanning about 600 light years.

The much smaller Omega Nebula, NGC 6618, has an apparent size of 11 arcminutes and an actual size of about 15 light years across. It's about 5,500 light years away. Its red light is the light of glowing hydrogen, ionized by ultraviolet radiation from bright stars within the nebula.

PixInsight counted 22,054 stars in this picture!
