Description

Around May 8th sunspot AR3664 caused a massive Coronal Mass Ejection that hit Earth starting May 10th night (GMT). The aurora display was probably the most spectacular of the last 50 years (in my memory), visible all night long and also at very southern latitudes. 

The all-sky webcam of our remote observatories (courtesy astroimager Saro Pomillo, thanks!) situated in the North Western Italian Alps recorded the night long show, with clouds adding drama to the scenary. The foreground mountains (southern edge of the view) still have snow which turned pink during the event.

The image below is from a webcam of the Zermatt sky area, the northern side of the Matterhorn (Cervino), just north of our observing site.
