Description

Like many in UK I got up at 04:30 to prepare for the occultation of Mars by our Moon. All was going well, under a clear sky… until the occultation was due to begin… the only clouds in the sky obliterated first contact!

Nevertheless, I persevered and attempted a video of second contact as Mars reappeared. In between clouds I witnessed Mars ‘popping out’, surprisingly quickly. Unfortunately my video shows no trace of this, despite inverting the images.

I enjoyed others’ pictures of this event, including some classic views of Mars appearing behind lunar peaks. My own picture is minutes before first contact, if you look hard you can just see Mars off the right lower quadrant - the mouse over offers an inverted view. I had to over-expose lunar to show up tiny Mars , but there it is. Another first for me.

Edit: I forgot to debayer the original image (thanks @Lee )
