Description

This image was taken from a village near the Great Himalayan National Park, which was a Bortle 2 location. I had been planning this vacation for the last two months with the intent to image for all five nights when moon is away. However, all the planning went haywire the moment I entered the airbnb. As it turns out, the description of the location of the property on the internet was not so-accurate. Whatever could go wrong, did go wrong.
1. We were in a valley surrounded by massive Himalayan mountains. Most of the sky from location was blocked, if not by mountains then by very tall ancient trees.
2. There was a single power supply in the location. The location was such that when used the  southern side and western side was completely blocked.
3. The weather - turned out to be very bad. I got one night to image. The western disturbance brought continuous heavy rain.
4. Suddenly I felt the weight of all the equipment. Carrying it 20 minutes uphill from the car park to location is not fun.
5. Tripod legs sink!
6. Cable management is a real thing.

Due to limited view in between trees, I could take approx. 2.5 hours on both M101 and this image. Whole night I was trouble shooting. The temperature in the night was nearing zero. Cable snags, dead batteries in extreme cold.. and what not.

To save the day, I and my partner saw milky way late rising above the southern side mountain late in the night. That was mesmerizing. I did not miss taking photograph of it.

Finally, we changed our location and came further down in the valley to a location with good food and river by the side. Like normal, non-AP vacation.
