Description

NGC 2440 is planetary nebula about 4000 light-years distant and .64 light-years across.  It has several nick names including Albino Butterfly Nebula, Burning Ember Nebula, and Kiss Nebula.  NGC 2440’s chaotic structure suggests that the aging star shed its mass several times. Each time, the star expelled material in a different direction, which produced the nebula’s bow-tie–shaped lobes.  The nebula’s colors correspond to material expelled by the star.  Ionized helium is blue, ionized oxygen is blue-green and ionized nitrogen and hydrogen are red.  It is moving away form us at 63 kilometers per second.  Its central star is possibly the hottest known white dwarf star.  It has an exceptionally high surface temperature of about 360,000 Fahrenheit.  It is 1,100 more luminous than the sun with a mass .6 of the sun.   To travel there on a Concord airplane traveling a twice the speed of sound would take 1.75 billion years.
