Description

Here is an image of today's Sun around noon taken from the balcony of my apartment in São Martinho do Porto, Portugal.

I am amazed at the details I can get using the quite small and modest 50mm Lunt telescope.  The surface details that the 2nd etalon provides are absolutely stunning, both visually and photographically; but that's not the case with the prominences. Therefore, this time I used the 2nd etalon for the surface video and removed it to take the video for the prominences. I also improved the technique of taking and flat master that would be applied to the surface image to eliminate uneven illumination which is a common issue in Lunt telescopes.

For processing I lean towards techniques that allow me to obtain a 3D effect.  I like to see the Sun as if it’s “floating” in space.

I hope you like the result as much as I do.

Technical details:
Telescope: Lunt 50 mm with double etalon
Camera: ZWO ASI 178mm
Technique: 3 videos of 1 minute each (surface, prominences, flat)
Processing: AutoStakkert, IMPPG, Photoshop and PixInsight

Title: Comparison vs the NSO/NSIP telescope in El Teide, Spain

Description: I took on the task of evaluating my image versus one taken by the NSO/NISP solar telescope on El Teide, Canary Islands around the same date/time that I took the videos that I used to generate my image. I wanted to evaluate the effect of etalon interplay on surface details and prominences. To my great surprise I found that the details on both images are practically identical. I captured all the prominences and it even seems to me that the details of the solar surface are better seen in my image. There is always room for improvement, and I will continue to refine my techniques for both capture and processing. Thank you very much to the IOTD team for appreciating my work and honoring me with this recognition.
