The Eagle Nebula (IC 4703) is a diffuse emission nebula or HII-region surrounding the young star cluster M 16.It is located in the constellation Serpent and is approximately 7,000 light-years from Earth. The youngest stars are estimated to be only 50,000 years old and the mean age to be 800,000 years old. In the middle are the "Pillars of Creation", made famous by an image from the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995. They extend over four light-years into space and are made of molecular hydrogen and dust. Protostars form from them.

The picture was taken over 6 nights in July and August 2023 from my south balcony in Berlin (Bortle 6-7).

Der Adlernebel (IC 4703) ist ein diffuser Emissionsnebel oder HII-Gebiet, der den jungen Sternenhaufen M 16 umgibt. Er befindet sich im Sternbild Schlange und ist ca. 7.000 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt. Die jüngsten Sterne werden auf nur 50.000 Jahre geschätzt, das mittlere Alter auf 800.000 Jahre. In der Mitte befinden sich die "Säulen der Schöpfung", bekannt geworden durch ein Bild des Hubble-Weltraumteleskop von 1995. Sie erstrecken sich über vier Lichtjahre in den Weltraum und bestehen aus molekularem Wasserstoff und Staub. Aus ihnen bilden sich Protosterne.

Das Bild ist über 6 Nächte im Juli und August 2023 von meinem Süd-Balkon in Berlin entstanden (Bortle 6-7).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
