Description

I've been concentrating on galaxies in the northern sky because they are well-situated for my location with long windows of visibility.

M106 is an impressive barred spiral in Canes Venatici at about 26 million light-years away. It is the largest galaxy in its local group, which includes among others NGC 4217, 4231, 4232 and 4248 seen in the same frame.

I was pleased with the detail revealed in the galaxy despite the murkiness of our skies. The dust lane in NGC 4217 was a bonus from the night.
