Description

I took some inspiration from one of johny's recent images and I wanted to see if there were any quasars in any of my own images.  I looked at some relatively recent asteroid survey data I had taken with the RASA.  When I searched Simbad I found there were over 300 quasars and Seyfert galaxies in this region.  There was no way I was going to annotate that many so I decided to limit the search to redshifts z > 3.  There were 26 results remaining and I was able to clearly see ten of them with a few others detectable but very faint.  Using Ned Wright's Cosmology Calculator I found that the most distant quasar in the image has a light travel time of 11.999 Gyr.  It blows my mind that there are distant objects luminous enough that we can see them from our backyards.

This image was taken on the ecliptic so there are more than 800 mostly main belt asteroids in this field as well.  If you look closely you may be able to see the trails of a couple bright ones. Some others are visible down to about mag 20.8 but only when using shift and stack.
